The pre and post internet world has happened in a generation.

I’d love to write that “the world would be a better place without the internet” however i don’t believe it would be, i’m the first to agree that the internet is not the answer to every question, however it does provide us with choice. The choice to keep in touch or not, the choice to speak, or listen, the choice to find out more. The internet is changing education, social lives, media and how we communicate. Part of me does wonder if too much information is a good thing or a bad thing and if it is changing modern society to become information whores, needing to know right now and not always cross checking what we are told.

If there is one thing I love doing its repurposing old hardware, those Pc’s that non Tech Savvy Windows users keep bleating on about just how slow they are and why they need an shiny new Ultrabook PC because that will improve their work rate. I love taking those PC’s which are still very much usable off the hands of people that don’t understand the worth of a decent computer and turn them into Servers or attach them to the TV to stream internet to the TV and save thousands on a new “Smart TV” while the industry is workingg out just what a Smart TV is.

Earlier today I posted a Lifehacker article about building a home server using Ubuntu which is a solid free Open source option based on Linux. I thought i would also share this gem of an OS FreeNAS with you which does many of the same things outlined in the lifehacker article.

I’ve been using FreeNAS for a few years now and find it to be a highly capable operating system and I thought i’d share with you some of the information about the OS.

What’s in my Bag?

I’ve written this article a few times over the years and it’s interesting to fire out that the laptop bag has actually got lighter over the last few years.

This is mainly due to the main hardware component getting lighter and more portable over the last few years to the point where I don’t carry a laptop any more I have no need for one thanks to the Apple iPad however Tablets in general have really changed how we travel and what we take with us.
