Last your I put up a post about 4 little Jailbreak tools which made the whole process of Jail-breaking worthwhile these were not huge theme changes but tweaks which Apple should have put on the iPad version of IOS anyway. Well it’s been a while since the release of IOS 6 removed any Jailbreak features from my device. This week however the launch of the Evasion untethered Jailbreak and a whole new set of issues and tweaks.

You may have read about my Jailbroken ipad in a recent post, and the problems backing up Apple devices.
Well having got it Jailbroken, I was interested to know what this gave me..
The first thing which struck me was the Cydia repository is using apt-get to download and install its packages, something any Debian/Ubuntu user is used to using i’m sure. Makes me wonder if this is how the App store works? (Not sure)
The most interesting (read geeky) thing i’ve got working so far, is turning the iPad into a Webserver using LightHTTPd, this is setup and easy from the command line obtained using the SSH daemon on the device. this can all be turned off or on using SBSettings. to save batteries.
However its XBMC on the iPad which for me is the single most obvious reason for Jailbreaking the device. If you’ve ever used the desktop version of the same software, then you will love the look and feel, setting it up to speak to NAS boxes on your network, or the media locations is done the same way as the Desktop version, and it plays back over the Wifi at home really well.
I obviously understand why apple has locked the device, for 99.9% of users the ease of use is perfect, hover i’m in that 0.1% of users who needs to fiddle, and hack around with their hardware, and being able to run nmap or traceroute from and SSH command line off the device for me is great..
More to come i’m sure as i get to grips with the vast repo that is Cydia, and having already borked it out once using one app, its taking it softly right now..
