Google seem to have the breakout hit of the year so far on their hands with ChromeOS, its giving the “laptop” the lease of life Windows 8 just ins’t providing the hardware manufactures and while Pixel may be wowing at the top end of the spectrum but its the £200/£300 end of the market which is proving to be the huge hit.
So what do I get for my £1000? Well the spec’s are indeed pretty stunning on the Chromebook with from an aesthetic point of view the look and feel of this device has Google aiming fiar and square at the Apple Macbook Pro’s An integrated HD webcam, microphone array, and active noise cancellation help ensure that video and audio are lifelike. Multi-finger touch, natural scrolling, and all the other gestures you would expect are smooth and precise on the etched glass touchpad.which by all accounts is far better than the one on the aforementioned Macbook Pro.
There is honestly not much I can say wrong about the Windows Phone 8, compared to its desktop sibling its a joy to use and zippy. As someone who has actively used IOS, Android and several other OS’s on phones over the years Microsoft have hit the money with this one.
Having used the phone for 90+ days now there are a few things which could be added as features in the next few major releases, maybe the phone can already do some of these, if it can i’m not sure how and post a comment and let me know.
I think it’s enough to say here that i’m not a huge fan of the desktop version of Windows 8, the phone version works, works well and makes understandable decisions. I’d even go as fa as saying Microsoft would be well placed to create a tablet with the phone version of its new flagship OS. However after a recent demo by an actual real world Microsoft marketing guy (and not a booth drone) I might actually be seeing what is going on with Microsoft Windows 8.
As the owner of a 16Gb iPad 3 and a Samsung Galaxy S, there are times when I wish my device has just a little bit more storage. When we go on holiday, lon road trips and the like.. During these times i’d like to put a few movies of my choice and a lot more music on my device as i know connectivity is going to be at a premium and it’s better to have too much than not enough..

Windows 8 PCs will come with Microsoft’s UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface) Secure Boot. This “feature” will make it much harder to boot Linux or other operating systems. Canonical, Ubuntu Linux’s parent company, is going to take a new approach to address this problem.
Really? Since when was the PC only for running Microsoft products on? What great mind came up with that idea? I thought a PC was for running an OS on, it could be Microsoft, but then it could be Linux, BSD, OpenSolaris.. Come to think of it doesn’t this cause Windows 8 PC buyers a problem if, when like the rest of the world they realise Windows 8 is a clusterbomb of uselessness and they have been ripped off, downgrading to Windows 7?
We know the mobile phone is where it is at, we also know the cloud is the glue which binds all our devices, what if this didn’t have to be the case? The cloud is great when you are tethered to your Wifi or a mobile signal, great if you work in a big city with lots of Wifi hotspots or mobile coverage. Not so good when the office blocks access to it because of security risks, or you live in a 3G blackspot.
There is a lifecycle in tech from birth to mainstream there is a similar path that many apps and gadgets will take on this journey and depending on how they fare at each stage depends on how sucessful they will become.. the question is which group do you fall in?
There is no doubt in my mind that the future of personal computing is at that point where a huge shift is going to made in the next 12 months away from the traditional desktop and over to the mobile device. The smartphone and the Tablet are for this next generation of computer users the way forward. The acceptance of the simple fact always on communication is a must. Driving this forward will be the applications we use, these will dictate how each individual mobile platform is used and its core group of users far more i belive than cost or hardware specification.

I heard a great quote this week “Google and Facebook are fighting the battle of the last decade” and this is very true, in respect of the evolution of the Internet both companies are web 2.0 companies, embracing social media and the desktop Internet. The parallels can be drawn with Microsoft in the end of the 90s who were fighting the battle of the desktop is and desktop applications with Apple, if we look back now the whole thing seems very irrelevant, a vast majority of what we do is online and we don’t really care so much about The so we are using because the applications we use and the ones which succeed are generally platform agnostic.
