Apparently the Tablet market has hit a plateau..

I was in a conversation at work with someone who’s opinion i respect, and he’s read that the Tablet has plateaued in sales..

Well to be honest i’m not surprised. 

for 10 years Bill Gates/Microsot tried to make Tablet computers, and failed, 2 years ago Apple brought us the tablet called the iPad. 

And then?

Well, nothing really, ok, a slew of under powered Android tablets which the bean counters got hold of and stripped out the grunt, and put out at an overpriced sales point. 

Then, HP took the 3rd option, mis marketed, dropped the ball and pulled out of WebOS.

So really there hasn’t been a tablet market has there. just a market leader, so comfortable in their product with limited or no competition, so no need to innovate for now… and a string of also rans..

To make an iPad competitor there is however a simple formula

$100 + WebOS..

As HP have just found the perfect Tablet pricepoint, they now have one of the fastest selling tablets out there, and set a price point, sub $200. And this is good news, especially if your name is Amazon..

The Tablet market doesn’t exist to plateau just yet, however i believe it will in 18 months it will. Not to replace the Laptop, however it will to act as a secondary device, then we can see the 2nd wave. Learning from the mistakes of the past

  • Widescreen doesn’t work
  • the iPad ratio does
  • Apps are key
  • Browsing the web is essential
  • Price is important
  • Brand is essential.

Stop! You’re All Mad! WebOS Is Better Than Android!

Don’t listen to the masses. Buy the TouchPad (if you can find one) and enjoy webOS. It’s an amazing OS killed off by natural selection, like a beautiful peacock with a rare and debilitating reproductive problem. It has the swankiness of iOS, the multitasking of Android all built by the folks that started it all, Palm. The Internet is being overran by Android nerds. Don’t listen to them.

The TouchPad was doomed from the start. Tablets, outside of the iPad, are a niche device that attempt to justify their existence by replicating notebook functions on a slate form factor. They just don’t make sense without a robust app marketplace. A consumer can buy an iPad and never touch the web browser because of the sheer amount of useful and fun apps. That’s not the case with Android, BlackBerry, or webOS devices. These platforms, while fully functional and vibrant as any smartphone OS, did not prep for the transition to a 10-inch, thus the weakest of them will die an early death from poor consumer acceptance.

It was crazy enough when talk began leaking out this morning that HP was spinning off their PC business — they’re the biggest PC maker in the world.

Now they’re winding down (read: killing off) webOS and killing off the Pre and the just-released TouchPad?

Yes, they have their large enterprise business. And now they have Autonomy. So essentially, HP is going to try to do the same move IBM did in the 1990s. It worked for IBM, will it work for HP?

More importantly, did HP really need to do this? Seems a little premature to me. Yes, the TouchPad was a flop. But we’re in the very early days of the mobile/tablet space. And again, HP rules (ruled) the PC business.

With the webOS buy, HP had an opportunity to control an entire ecosystem — hardware and software working seamlessly together. They could have been a true foil to Apple. Instead, they’re giving up and becoming an enterprise company. 

Wow.

Bottom line: This is a very poorly run company.

Time For Facebook To Buy WebOS

In the rush to analyze what HP just did, everyone is throwing around a ton of ideas for what happens next. Of those, Nicholas Carlson’s is the best so far.

Dan Frommer calls this “not a crazy idea”. I’d go farther. It’s a good one given Facebook’s vision. They clearly believe in HTML5 and are working towards that future, but at the same time, they need their own mobile OS solution. WebOS would give them the best of both worlds.

Facebook has tried to fork Android to make their own flavor, but whispers suggest that hasn’t worked as well as was hoped. WebOS could be fully their’s — for a price.

The idea of Amazon buying webOS makes some sense too, but they’re likely already too far down the path of building their own Android fork. We should hear more about that soon.

Google is another wild card. They already have Android and Chrome OS, so why buy a third OS? Well, if the Palm patents were included, that would be one reason. But more generally, webOS is also in-line with their vision of a web-based future. Certainly part of it could help Chrome OS and/or Android. 

But a certain $12.5 billion deal that just went down may preclude a webOS deal.

One final thought: HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion. Given the current market, Palm’s patent portfolio alone is likely worth much more than that. HP’s move could go from dumbfounding to genius if they spin those patents off for several times what they paid for all of Palm.

Jolicloud as a new Tab page.

I was looking for a replacement on Google Chrome, for the page which appears when you open a new tab (the new tab page?) There are plugins, and there are whole sites dedicated to this browser state. http://myfav.es/ is a good example, and you can setup this site to point to various websites

However I was looking for something a little different, and a visit back to an old favorite Jolicloud provided me with a solution, 

I’ve used the Jolicloud OS on netbooks previously, however its recent incarnation the Jolicloud system has a great webpage which can work as a great launcher.

The system will also work on other browsers other than Chrome..

The primary reason for using the site i guess is to link to the burgeoning number of web apps out there however, and adding many of them is as simple as using the pre defined links in the add apps section. It is also however possible to add links to external apps which chrome will run from the Browser.

Jolicloud also links into (if you want to) Google docs and Dropbox, so you can file browse content within these services.

As with any good web app, the formula seems to be add a social aspect and Jolicloud have this added where you can see what apps your “friends” are using. 

As i said, i’ve used the JoliOS as an install, and finding this aspect of the system is great. And as a cloud based OS it works well.

HP: The Linux Desktop Company

Well, I didn’t see this coming. HP CEO Leo Apotheker, according to Bloomberg/Newsweek said that “every one of the PCs shipped by HP will include the ability to run WebOS in addition to Microsoft Corp.’s Windows.” I knew HP was serious about webOS, its Linux-based tablet/smartphone operating system. I didn’t know that HP was this serious.

This demo shows some very innovative features of the HP Web OS Tablet including interaction with WebOS phones using a bump like interface. The task switching looks very nice however i’m not sure how long it would actually be before i got annoyed with it in real life. And the mail and browser look very appleesque. All round good marks for the WebOS from this demo though.

HP: webOS also coming to notebooks and desktop computers

Although the new Touchpad tablet was the highlight of HP’s press event this morning, the company also dropped some tantalizing hints about its future plans for the webOS platform. HP says that it plans to bring the operating system to a wide range of form factors and expects to eventually ship it on desktop and notebook computers.
